Chemotherapy can cause hair loss because it targets all quickly dividing cells — including healthy and malignant ones.

Hair follicles, the structures in the skin from which hair emerges, include some of the body’s fastest-growing cells.

Cells in your hair follicles divide every 23 to 72 hours if you are not undergoing cancer treatment.

However, since chemotherapy kills cancer cells, it also kills hair follicle cells.

You may lose part or all of your hair within a few weeks after starting some chemotherapy medications. Hair loss can occur gradually or rather suddenly.
