In my video about if you should take creatine, someone commented: “only con: hair loss”.
So let’s try to answer that question, does creatine cause hair loss?
Right off the bat, full disclosure, I’m not a doctor, so please do your own research on this topic and don’t take this video as gospel truth.
#Creatine causing hair loss is one of the longest held assumptions in the fitness industry. A 2021 paper from the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition entitled “Common questions and misconceptions about creatine supplementation: what does the scientific evidence really show?” can hopefully help us get to the bottom of this question.
This article says that the assumption that creatine causes hair loss comes one one single piece of research from the clinical journal of sports medicine that showed that creatine supplementation resulted in higher levels of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a male sex hormone that can be related to hair loss in some men.
Based on this limited evidence, the 2021 paper concludes that “In summary, the current body of evidence does not indicate that creatine supplementation increases total testosterone, free testosterone, DHT or causes hair loss/baldness.”
In the spirit of full disclosure, Andrew Huberman, a neurobiologist from Stanford university that I trust does warn that creatine might exacerbate symptoms of hair loss in some men. I personally don’t think you should worry about losing your hair from creatine.
